Here is a quick tip for business college students who are struggling to get a job: start a small business. You have the necessary knowledge to to your market research, find a product, market the product and start making some money. Yes, it most likely won't become your main source of income but it's a win-win situation, you'll get hands-on job experience which you desperately need, you'll make some money, you'll create a side-hustle to complement your income and you might find out that you don't need a job and it could become your main source of income. I find it so sad, but people tend to forget that getting a job is not the only way to make some money, especially business grads. You have the necessary skill set to create a small business, the amount of time you're spending while you're 100% sure you won't get a job because you lack the experience is mind boggling!

You're basically saying we need to be Yes men, because thats what the people that are behind closed doors are. All Yes men that do the bidding of the CEO. I have worked at this job at USIC for 6yrs, started at 14.50 and just got to 25. You know what starting pay is now? 20... You can only say take charge of your career when in reality you will never be able to because unless you're willing to bend over and be a bitch you will never get promoted. Just the facts.

It's a popularity contest, just like high school, the more things change the more they stay the same. Hard work doesn't mean s@#t, it a just comes down to how f@ckable you are. So backwards, that is why the country is so messed up. But like almost everything, it boils down to sex.

I did recall that they declined me for a promotion for a few years before they promoted me. It's usually a political decision, it's not about who the best employee is at all. Maybe there's no open positions available, but usually they just want to push certain employees around...

It's very important to realise that an interview is a two way thing. YOU are interviewing them. Ask them the questions that you need the answers to. I've just turned down 3 jobs because they weren't right for me. You will automatically be more desirable, when you don't go in to an interview begging them for something. Know your worth. Don't be arrogant, but realise that they're not doing you a favour. You're earning them money and they need you as much as you need them. And if it's not right for you, then just keep looking and have faith. But reflect honestly on yourself, try to look at why they might reject you. They'll have hundreds of people who could all do the job, you have to be somebody they're looking for. But you've been employed before, you'll be employed again. And maybe consider if you could work for yourself.

Got promoted 4-5 times, but then found out the lower positions were eliminated, which means new hires with less much qualifications were automatically “promoted”. For folks hired via “special programs”, they were also promoted without doing anything extra.

is the take away that you should report straight to the boss's boss, in order to get noticed and appreciated ? why bother reporting to that middle manager who dedicates 90% of his time playing office politics, who sees you as a threat to his own job, and who may say bad things about you, to his own boss, behind your back ? Also, not being promoted, yet doing a job that feels fulfilling and helps as a result, to maintain good mental health, is not necessarily bad.

There are horizontal and vertical promotions. I wanted a horizontal promotion, but got offered a vertical one first. I took it to get into the spaces with the decision makers and then leveraged it to get the horizontal promotion I wanted. I ended up leaving for another company because the vertical promotion made me a more desirable candidate and they offered an even better horizontal promotion. Now that horizontal promotion some people have to fight years for, if they ever get it at all, I got within months and I can let go of the vertical promotion I didn't really want anyway. I'm also making way more money now without the hassle of that vertical promotion than I did with it.

Very true - although paid pretty well and thought of as some kind of 'expert' I'm pigeonholed and no chance of promotion. But then again I've also learnt to knock off at 4pm every day, never work more than 40 hours a week and refuse any tasks which would be too difficult from an hours point of view - what are they gonna do - fire me? Go ahead, I don't really mind as the extra time I have means I make nearly as much money on the side these days.

This is not true for all fields- just in corporate America. It takes some years in technical fields to actually develop your skills and then get promoted. This is why I work a gate-kept state job with good pay and benefits. I don't need the rat race. I could have moved up in my last profession but the pay would still have been fairly low

Hate to say this, but you have to play politic in the office in order to be promoted. You need both the hard and soft skills to build your social capital. For most it's just better to job hop, as most are either: a) A rockstar top performer but is not very social b) A all talk but no work person.

The double standard is rea but also warrented. If you quit with respect the rehirability remains. If they fire you then odds are they will never rehire you. Also many areas of work will call a prior employer for a reference. Dont give them anything to use against you.

I finished schooling with a policy degree with a minor in economics and had international research experience in Tokyo with a think tank that only took Masters and PhD candidates, I was the only undergrad they took working on U.N. research. After graduating I sent out 3,685 applications and customized my resume for each one with a cover letter to boot. When I was finally hired at my first job, I was working in municipal government as an analyst to cover maternity leave. Now I’m in the provincial government as a senior advisor here in Canada. My advice, just keep trying. I know it’s hard but I’ve been there, just be tenacious and never get impatient. I’ve been ghosted, had harsh rejections, and even mocked by a lot of HR people where they copied and pasted a part of my cover letter as part of a rejection they sent. Trust me, there’s always light at the end of the tunnel. That kid should also accept that he may not work in the field he studied in, that’s just the reality of life.

Realizing this pushed me to resign from my last job. Thought I'd proven myself over the past 2 years. My manager elected me to an esteemed committee, my co-worker said I should be ASM, clients spoke highly of me too. However leadership told me to my face that my department had no promotions. Every department did except mine. Approaching my 2 year anniversary, I spoke with the CEO directly about designing a path upwards for me. It was either up, or out. I was even okay with just a title change. Anniversary comes around, guess what I got? A thank you email and an Uber Eats gift card. I was already out the door, but it was the final nail in the coffin. They didn't even try to make a counteroffer with my new position. All of this was a harsh reality check: they didn't care about my department, so they didn't care about my value or growth. Sidenote: I also wasn't in the "circle" of employed family members/close friends of the higher ups.

I'm eternally grateful to one of my previous employers for giving me a layoff story that I can share at interviews and with friends. The employer was leasing an office space but was planning to move to a new unit. They requested planning permission to move the toilets in the new unit. They decided to not to renew the lease on their existing office space before receiving planning permission on their new unit. Yeah, uh, that was a mistake, as they had to explain to me that they did not get the planning permission and thus did not have an office to do business from, or for me to work from.

Why is it that every employer tells you how important you are, while making you feel like a cheap prostitute? This must be why so many people are freelancing or starting their own businesses.

I'm so glad I just watched your video. I won't be applying for any corporate recruiter positions after watching this. I'm currently an HR Generalist and I do a lot of recruiting but I never have that many reqs to work on at one time nor am I measured on my time to fill. That just isn't the culture where I am. I don't work for a very corporate company and your video was a reminder that I don't want to. I think you just saved me! ☺
